How To Teach Us

The How to Teach Us online course was designed to help K-12 teachers integrate student voice into their classrooms. “How To Teach Us” was named as such because, in an effort to showcase strategies to enhance classroom practices around student voice, three seperate documentaries were constructed to coincide with the three weekly themes of the course that specifically follow elementary, middle, and high school students.

The three focus areas for the course were: significant learning, day-to-day routines/schedules, and student centered assessment practices. The course is designed to be completed over a total of 8 hours of work, over a period of three weeks, with three separate assignments that ultimately culminate in a teacher presentation of learning (POL).

The How to Teach Us MOOC was originally offered by the High Tech High Graduate School of Education through Coursera. It was written and created by Larry Rosenstock, Dan Wise, and Patrick Yurick. When originally offered, course participants joined thousands of other learners to learn the lessons offered in this MOOC. The course was designed to highlight the benefits of student voice.

The version that appears on this site is an archived version of that course designed to walk you through the original course. Unlike the original course, however, this course will not include collaborative learning unless you, the course participant, integrate your own peers into the experience. In other words, this course design is meant to be completed by you with only the documents available in the archive. This database includes 9 videos, 3 activities, and 22 documents.
