The How to Make a Comic Book online course was designed to give anyone ages 13 and up the instruction needed to create their own 6 page comic book on their own. “How to Make a Comic Book” was a project-centered effort to teach newcomers to the craft of making comics about the process of their creation. The course features a number of supporters, and interviews with major comic book writers, artists, and distributors are made available throughout the course.

The course walks participants through the full process of comic creation, starting at brainstorming, moving on to scripting, before starting thumbnailing, penciling, lettering, inking, and assembly. The course is designed to be completed over a total of 20 hours of work, over a period of six weeks, with six main assignments that ultimately culminate in a fully assembled comic that the course participant can then take a selfie with.

The How to Make a Comic Book Course was originally offered by the High Tech High Graduate School of Education through Coursera. It was written and created by Christopher O’Keeffe and Patrick Yurick. When originally offered, course participants joined thousands of other learners to learn the lessons offered in this MOOC. The course was designed to give learners of all skill levels the tools they would need in order to create their own four page comic.

The version that appears on this site is an archived version of that course, that allows you to still take and learn from it without the original offering method. Unlike the original course, however, this course will not include collaborative learning unless you, the course participant, integrate your own peers into the experience. In other words, this course design is meant to be completed by you with only the documents available in the archive. This database includes 39 videos, 14 activities, and 83 documents, and 6 podcasts.
